Description
Head of a femur (upper leg bone) after it has been removed during hip replacement surgery. The femur shaft (the remaining part of the bone, not seen) is hollowed out and a pin inserted. A ball on the end of the pin replaces the femoral head, forming the new joint with an artificial socket that is implanted into the pelvis. This surgery is usually performed due to arthritis, the degeneration of the joints, and restores mobility to people who would otherwise be incapacitated by pain and unable to move freely.
