Artist's Description

Female balloonist. Magazine engraving of a balloon ascent by 'Citoyenne [Citizen] Henri', a pioneering French female balloonist. Although she was not the first female balloonist, her flights caused a sensation. She is accompanied by Andre- Jacques Garnerin (1769-1823), who was the first to jump in a parachute without a fixed frame. The date of her second flight, 23 July 1798, is given in the French Republican calendar.
