Artist's Description

False morel mushroom (Esculenta gyromitra) growing in woodland soil. These mushrooms are the fruiting bodies of this fungus and can reach 4 centimetres in height. They are deadly poisonous when raw and can be harmful even when cooked. The mushroom raises the reproductive spores above the ground to be ejected from sacs (asci) in the irregularly lobed cap. This fungus is associated with conifers in sandy soil during the spring.
