Description
False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the upper surface of a cat's tongue, showing the numerous spiky papillae that give the tongue its rough, rasping texture. This texture is used by cats to penetrate their coat during grooming, & for lapping up water or milk. This specimen shows conical papillae found towards the sides of the tongue. Magnification: x9 at 35mm size. Original is BW print P475/022.
