Description
Macrophage. False-colour scanning electron micro- graph (SEM) of a migrating macrophage. The cell's irregular shape is seen, characterised by thin projections (filopodia) used as a support and for motility. Macrophages form part of the reticulo- endothelial system of the human body, that includes those cells and tissues with phagocytic properties. Macrophages are capable of engulfing and digesting cellular debris, bacteria, other foreign bodies and aged red cells. Although they wander freely, macrophages aggregate at sites of infection as a first response of the immune system. Magnification: x22,100 at 6x7cm size.
