Description
False-colour infrared image showing an enormous shell of dust surrounding the bright supergiant star R Corona Borealis (R Cor Bor). The image was made by the Infrared Astronomical Satellite at a wavelength of 100 microns. The shell is thought to have been created by a mass-loss process which ceased thousands of years ago. It is now around 25 light years across. R Cor Bor is a variable star. It is usually visible to the naked eye (magnitude 6.0), but occasionally drops in brightness to as faint as 13th magnitude. The drops take place abruptly & unpredictably & last for 1-2 months.
