Description
False-colour transmission electron micrograph of red HIV-2 AIDS virus particles budding from the green plasma membrane of an infected T-lymphocyte. HIV-2 (human immunodeficiency virus type 2) is sufficiently different from the first AIDS virus (HIV-1) to warrant separate classification. HIV-2 is more closely related to the simian immunodefic- iency virus (SIV) found in monkeys. HIV enters the T-cell where its genetic material (in the form of RNA) becomes translated into DNA to subvert the host's DNA into making HIV replicas that ultimately destroy the host cell.
