Description
False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) showing AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) virus particles budding from the plasma membrane of an infected T4 lymphocyte, a white blood cell. The viruses appear rougly spherical with red cores. AIDS disables the immune system, rendering the victim liable to a number of fatal infections. The virus (designated HIV - Human Immunodeficiency Virus) enters the T-cell where its genetic material (RNA) is translated into DNA to subvert the host's DNA into making copies of the virus, which ultimately destroy the T-cell.
