Artist's Description
F119 engine during operational testing. This American thrust-vectoring jet engine is made by Pratt and Whitney and is used in the supersonic F-22 'Raptor' fighter. It produces around 160kN (kilonewtons) or 35,000lb thrust - more than twice the thrust of equivalent current engines, while using fewer and more durable components. Many of these utilise exotic alloys such as rhenium steel. The exit nozzles pitch up and down by up to 20 degrees, deflecting the exhaust to increase aircraft manoeuverability. The F119's key feature is 'supercruise', the ability of the engine to maintain an aircraft in flight at supersonic speeds without the use of the afterburner. Photographed at the 57th Component Repair Squadron's test cell hush house at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada, USA.
