Artist's Description
Eyes and lenses compared. This diagram is from the 1630 edition of the work 'Rosa Ursina', by the German Jesuit astronomer Christoph Scheiner. Scheiner was the co-discoverer of sunspots and published his work in 'Rosa Ursina', which became the standard treatise on the subject for more than a century. The work contained numerous observations and also a detailed account of his methods and apparatus. Here, he is comparing natural and artificial lenses.
