Artist's Description
Eyewall of Hurricane Katrina, seen from inside the eye over the Gulf of Mexico on 28 August 2005. At this point, Katrina was a Category Five hurricane with winds of over 250 kilometres per hour. This towering mass of white clouds is part of the eyewall, the area around the central eye, and where the strongest winds are found. The next day, Katrina made landfall, devastating the Gulf coast of the USA with immense damage and loss of life. Photographed from a WP-3D Orion (P-3) airplane on a NOAA hurricane hunter flight. One of the turboprop airplane's propellers is seen at right.
