Artist's Description
Extinct quagga (Equus quagga quagga), artwork. This type of zebra was once found in South Africa. Unlike other zebra, the quagga had stripes just on the head, neck and forebody; the rest of its body was brown with a yellowish tinge. Vast herds of game: among these, the quagga, Burchell's zebra (related to the quagga) and the blue antelope, roamed the plains of South Africa prior to European settlement. The coming of settlers from Europe led, through hunting, to a number of African species becoming endangered with declining numbers. Both Burchell's zebra and the blue antelope were hunted to extinction. The quagga has been extinct since 1883.
