Description
Exploration in Brazil. 19th-century artwork of explorers using tree trunks to cross rivers in an upland jungle area of north-eastern Brazil. They are journeying in the Tumuk Humak Mountains, on the borders between Brazil and Suriname and French Guiana. These mountains form a divide between the Amazon Basin to the south and the Atlantic coastal area to the north. This artwork, by Edouard Riou, is from 'Voyages dans l'Amerique du Sud' (1883) by French explorer Jules Crevaux (1847–1882) who travelled extensively in this region in 1877 and 1878.
