Artist's Description

European garden spider (Araneus diadematus) female and egg sac. After mating, the female European garden spider lays its eggs in this sac woven from silk. The egg sac can contain hundreds of eggs. The female spider guards the egg sac until she dies in late autumn. The eggs then hatch the following spring. Photographed in the UK.
