Artist's Description

Eugene Pierre Godard, French aeronaut and balloon manufacturer (1827-1890). Between 1845 and 1890 he constructed about 18 hot-air (Montgolfier) balloons, 50 gas balloons and made about 1500 ascents in a dozen countries on two continents – Europe and America. He established several world records for altitude, distance and time. Following the flights in 1863 of Felix Tournachon (Nadar) in the gigantic ”Le Geant” gas balloon, in which Eugene and his brother Louis acted as his crew, Eugene constructed a Montgolfier hot-air balloon, “L'Aigle”. This was over twice the size of ”Le Geant”. In 1867, he made a number of scientific ascents with the French astronomer Camille Flammarion. During the 1870-71 siege of Paris he organised a balloon air-mail service.
