Artist's Description
Ethel Greenglass Rosenberg (1915-1953), Cold War spy who was convicted of passing atom bomb secrets from the USA to the USSR. This is an FBI photograph of Rosenberg, following her arrest on 11th August 1950, in New York City, USA. Rosenberg, along with her husband Julius, denied the charges. Although Soviet handlers later said that Julius had been recruited in 1942, it is now thought that he did not supply any crucial nuclear secrets, and that Ethel only played a minor role. The Rosenburgs were convicted on 29th March 1951. Despite appeals for clemency, they were executed on 19th June 1953. They were the only two US civilians to be executed for espionage during the Cold War.
