Artist's Description
Erupting star. Computer artwork showing an outburst from a growing star. The young sun-like star is encircled by its planet-forming disk of gas and dust. Streams of material are seen spiralling from the disk onto the star, increasing its mass and causing the star to brighten and heat up dramatically. This results in an outburst that causes temperatures to rise in the disk, which melts silicate particles, forming crystals of silicate similar to those found in comets. Artwork based on evidence found in 2008 by NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, of this process in the disk the young sun-like star EX Lupi.
