Artist's Description

Ernest Petin (1812-1879). 1867 illustration of the French milliner (hat-maker) and balloonist Ernest Petin. Petin tried to construct balloons on the structure of bird wings. Following numerous failures, he finally came up with a design he said could carry 3000 people. In 1852 he flew with three others in a balloon named the Bon Vivant, which measured 102 feet long with sails and a long gondola.
