Artist's Description

Epicardium tissue, fluorescence deconvolution micrograph. Fluorescent dyes have been used to highlight tissues, cellular structures and proteins: epicardium collagen (red), cardiac actin (green). The heart is a hollow muscular pump, and the epicardium is the outermost layer. It is mostly connective tissue, such as collagen. The much thicker layer of the myocardium, the muscular part of the heart, contains contractile muscle proteins such as the actin seen here.
