Artist's Description

Enema use. Patient receiving an enema, thought to have a cleansing effect. This illustration is from a 15th century Dresden manuscript of the writings of the Ancient Greek physician Galen. Although he lived in the 2nd century AD, his views (based on those of Hippocrates) held sway in Europe until the 16th century. He is credited with discovering the use of the pulse in diagnosis. He used animal vivisection to study anatomy.
