Artist's Description
Endangered Guam rail bird. View of the rare Guam rail (family: Rallidae), a flightless bird found only on the Pacific island of Guam. This species has been saved from the brink of extinction. It survives in a rearing compound near Guam airport, surrounded by an electrified fence. The Guam rail is being protected from the brown tree snake (Boiga irregularis), a bird-eating pest introduced onto the island half a century ago. Since then, the snake has eradicated 9 of Guam's 11 native species of forest bird. It is thought the island hosts over a million brown tree snakes. Scientists are attempting to save the remaining bird species while controlling the alien snake pest.
