Description
Air pressure experiment. Paired rubber seals (versions of the Magdeburg hemispheres) inside an evacuated vacuum chamber. At the start of this experiment, the two rubber seals had a vacuum between them (see image C011/1405), meaning they couldn't be pulled apart without using great force because of the weight of the atmosphere. However, once the air in the vacuum chamber was evacuated, then they fell apart as the atmospheric pressure keeping them together was lost. The gauge at upper centre records the pressure.
