Description
Emperor Maximillian, by Durer. Emperor Maximillian I, by Albrecht Durer 1519. Durer met Emperor Maximilian at Augsburg in 1518 and made this portrait in a drawing. It was probably used to trace a likeness directly onto a woodcut block to make a printed portrait. Versions of Durer's woodcut were produced by other artists, probably to satisfy demand. This one, attributed to Hans Weiditz, places the Emperor in an elaborate architectural frame with a scroll below, emphasising the majesty of the sitter. Woodcut on parchment. Maximilian I was King of the Romans from 1486 and Holy Roman Emperor from 1508 until his death. He was never crowned by the pope, as the journey to Rome was blocked by the Venetians.
