Artist's Description
Elephant bird attack. 19th-century artwork illustrating a translation of the short story 'Aepyornis Island' (1894) by British author Herbert George Wells (1866-1946). The protagonist hatches an egg of the extinct Aepyornis elephant bird. This flightless bird reached a weight of 400 kilograms and a height of three metres. Endemic to the island of Madagascar, it is thought that it went extinct around 1000 years ago, though fossils and remains gave rise to numerous stories and legends. Artwork from the 21st volume (first period of 1898) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
