Artist's Description
Food debris on tooth. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of food debris (orange) in the furrow of a molar tooth. If left on the tooth this material will quickly be colonised by bacteria and turned into a sticky deposit called plaque, which is more difficult to remove. The bacteria in plaque digest carbohydrates from food, producing as a waste product an acid that dissolves calcium minerals in the tooth. This eventually produces a hole that exposes pain receptors in the tooth's sensitive interior. Tooth decay can be prevented by regular brushing and flossing, and can be remedied by fillings. Magnification: x40 at 6x6cm size. Magnification: x17 at 35mm size.
