Description
Avian flu viruses. Transmission electron micrograph of avian influenza A viruses. This strain of influenza is lethal to chickens but causes no apparent infection in humans. It is morphologically identical to other influenza A viruses, with a lipid envelope, symmetrical protein coat and an RNA (ribonucleic acid) genome. Complex proteins on the envelope appear here as a fringe of spikes around each virus. Mutations in these proteins give rise to new strains that can evade the host's immune system. The central virus has ruptured and released its core of RNA and protein. Magnification x200,000 at 7x9 inch size.
