Electrical transformer in a plug. This is a step-down transformer, which means that it reduces the voltage taken from the mains. The current flowing through the primary core (right) generates a magnetic field. This induces a current in the secondary coil (left). As there are fewer turns in the secondary coil than there are in the primary coil, the voltage is reduced. Transformers only work with alternating current.
