Artist's Description
Edward F. Knipling (1909-2000), US entomologist. Knipling and his colleague Raymond C. Bushland developed the sterile insect technique in the early 1950s. This pest suppression technique involved the release of sterile insects among insect populations. This was first used to eradicate screwworm. For this work, Knipling and Bushland received the 1992 World Food Prize. Kipling, who obtained his doctorate in entomology from Iowa State University, worked at the Agricultural Research Service of the US Department of Agriculture until 1973, and was a consultant there for a further 27 years. His other awards include the National Medal of Science (1966) and the Japan Prize (1995).
