Description
Edward C. Kendall (1886-1972), American biochemist and Nobel laureate. Kendall isolated and identified thyroxine from the thyroid and cortisone from the adrenal cortex. Thyroxine, a compound of iodine and the amino acid tyrosine, is the active substance of the thyroid gland. In the 1930s Kendall investigated the secretions of the adrenal gland, he isolated twenty-eight steroids, four of which were physiologically active. One of these compounds was cortisone, which was found to be an anti-inflammatory and is now used to treat rheumatoid arthritis. Kendall was awarded the 1950 Nobel Prize for medicine for these discoveries.
