Description
Ectopic pregnancy. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a sectioned chorionic villus during an ectopic pregnancy. This is in a 35 year old woman 40 days after conception. In an ectopic pregnancy the embryo implants in a fallopian tube (oviduct) instead of the uterus. The sectioned villus reveals its supportive stroma (pink) and red blood cells (red). Chorionic villi normally form in the placenta during pregnancy to allow the foetus to exchange nutrients, gases and waste with the mother. Ectopic pregnancy is life-threatening, and requires the immediate surgical removal of the foetus. Magnification: x1000 at 6x7cm size.
