Description
Eclipses in Ptolemy's Almagest (1515). The 'Almagest' is a famous compendium authored by the 2nd century AD Greek astronomer Ptolemy. It summarised the learning of the Ancient Greeks, and was the basis of much of the astronomy and science of medieval Europe until the time of Copernicus (1543). This page is from book 6 of an edition produced in Venice, Italy, in 1515. Book 6 was on the topic of both solar and lunar eclipses and their predictions. This page shows 16 compass points and an inner ring showing signs of the zodiac. The text is in Latin. This edition uses Gherardo da Cremona's translation from Arabic.
