Artist's Description

Early storage battery. This is the Faure accumulator, a storage battery that was invented in 1880 by the French chemist Camille Alphonse Faure (1840-1898). This was one of the first such devices, and was capable of storing electrical power for long periods of time. It consisted of lead plates that were covered with a lead oxide paste and then gently heated while immersed in sulphuric acid. The resulting lead sulphates had an increased electrical capacity. This led eventually to modern lead-acid car batteries. Artwork from the first volume (first period of 1888) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
