Artist's Description

Early sighting of Brocken spectres. Historical artwork of a sighting of Brocken spectres, based on the account of a traveller called Hane. He and a companion climbed the Brocken, the tallest peak in Germany's Harz mountains, on 23 May 1797. Hane, who had made at least 30 previous trips, finally saw the shadows in the sky that came to be called Brocken spectres, named after this mountain. Hane and his companion raised and waved their hands, and saw the spectres imitate these movements. The Brocken spectres are shadows cast by a low-lying Sun on mists or clouds. This engraving is from The Atmosphere (1873) by Camille Flammarion.
