Here, wooden clubs and stone axes are being used to defend against a large cave bear. Mammoths are seen in the background at upper left. Cave bears and mammoths are examples of the megafauna that existed during the Pleistocene epoch from 1.8 million years ago up to 10,000 years ago. Original artwork published in Primitive Man (Louis Figuier, 1870).
