Description
Early anaesthesia. Anaesthetist using a bottle to drip ether onto a patient's covered face during surgery. Ether was discovered in 1275, but was not used as an anaesthetic until 1842, gaining widespread use from 1846. However, ether was not ideal for use as a general anaesthetic, and was mostly replaced by the use of chloroform. Photographed at Herrin Hospital, Herrin, Illinois, USA, in January 1939.
