E. coli bacteria. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Escherichia coli bacteria, a cause of food poisoning. These Gram-negative bacteria are present in the intestinal tract of humans and other animals. They are usually harmless, but cross-contamination through food and other routes can cause diarrhoea and gastroenteritis in humans. Magnification unknown.
