Dubai skyline and desert. Desert landscape set against a skyline of skyscrapers rising from the central region of the city of Dubai. Located on the Persian Gulf coast of the emirate of Dubai, within the United Arab Emirates (UAE), a construction boom began in the 1980s. Hundreds of skyscrapers were built over the following decades. 2010 saw the completion of the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa (830 metres, far left).
