Description
Hepatitis B vaccine. Close-up of a syringe draw- ing up hepatitis B vaccine from a small bottle held in a gloved hand. Hepatitis B is a viral dis- ease that causes acute liver inflammation and can sometimes be fatal. Although there is no cure most victims eventually recover. Some, however, go on to develop chronic hepatitis or complications like cirrhosis and liver cancer. The vaccine is usually only recommended for high-risk groups such as male homosexuals and needle-sharing drug addicts. It consists of proteins from the surface coat of the hepatitis B virus, manufactured by genetically engineered yeast. The vaccine activates the body's immunity by stimulating antibody production.
