Description
Dounreay PFR nuclear power station, near Thurso, Scotland. This is the Prototype Fast Reactor (PFR), which operated from 1974 to 1994. It was the second fast breeder reactor built at Dounreay, and was fuelled by plutonium and uranium. It was cooled by liquid sodium, and could produce 250MW of electrical power. This nuclear power station, and two others, were run by the UK Atomic Energy Authority, and included the UK's first fast breeder reactors. Since the reactors were closed, Dounreay has carried out reprocessing of used nuclear fuel. From April 2005, the site has been owned by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority. The initial decommissioning should be complete by 2036, but the site will not be safe to use until 2336.
