Artist's Description

Dodo (Raphus cucullatus), 19th-century artwork, with two other birds and an eel outlined. Roughly the size of a swan, the dodo was heavily-built and flightless. It was found on the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean and became extinct around 1681 following the arrival of humans. Its appearance is known only from contemporary sketches and artworks, as no intact skins survive. This artwork, based on the larger work 'Landscape with Birds' (1628) by Dutch painter Roelant Savery (1576-1639), was published in 'The Dodo and its Kindred' (1848). The 1628 original is held in the Belvedere in Vienna, Austria.
