Artist's Description
The neutral xi (or cascade) particle was discover- ed from this bubble chamber photograph, taken in the 15- inch (38 cm) bubble chamber at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, California, in 1959. A negative kaon enters from bottom & interacts with a proton in the chamber to produce the xi-zero. Being neutral, the xi- zero leaves no track itself. It was particularly difficult to discover because it decays into two more neutral particles, the lambda & neutral pion, which are also unseen.
