Description
Dinosaur footprint. Fossilised footprint of a sauropod dinosaur. This footprint dates from the Jurassic period (approximately 208-144 million years ago). Preserved sauropod tracks were generally formed in marine coastal environments, when footprints left in mud or sand were baked dry by the sun and filled with other material. When this material later eroded away, the footprints were revealed. Sauropods were a large group of gigantic herbivores that reached 35 metres in length and around 100 tonnes in weight. They are thought to have often lived half in water, which supported their body weight. Photographed in Portugal.
