Artist's Description
False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of Cyclotella pseudostelligera, a diatom that lives in fresh and brackish water. Diatoms are a type of alga. They consist of two valves, made of silica, which fit together like the top & bottom of a box. The exterior of the valves are often highly decorative, with pores, spikes or other types of projections. This TEM of a cross- section through one of the valves of the diatom shows a radial pattern of pores. Magnification: x9500 at 6x6cm size. JBU colouring: yellow & blue/purple. BW original is B305/10M.
