Description
Diamond in host rock. Close-up of a diamond (upper left) still embedded in its host rock. Diamond is an allotrope of carbon in which the carbon atoms share strong covalent bonds and are arranged into a cubic lattice. As a result, diamond is the hardest naturally occurring material known on the planet, and has been utilised in various tools for cutting, grinding, and polishing. This diamond measures 3mm across.
