Artist's Description
Devonian invertebrates near a geyser. Artwork of springtails (foreground, order Collembola), with one of them being preyed upon by a trigonotarbid arachnid (centre left). The plants are Horneophyton sporophytes. Springtails are primitive flightless insects that still exist today. Trigonotarbida is an extinct order of spider-like animals. This scene is based on fossils found preserved in the Rhynie Chert area in Scotland. Around 410 million years ago, during the Early Devonian, geysers engulfed this area with mineralised water, preserving its animals and plants.
