Artist's Description
Designs of Leyden jars. 19th-century illustration of three designs of Leyden jars. These were the earliest form of capacitor, a device for storing electrical charge. They consist of a glass jar with a layer of metal foil on the outside and a similar layer on the inside. A metal rod, the electrode, passes through the neck of the bottle and is connected to the inner foil. The jar is charged by an electrostatic generator connected to the electrode. The classic jar design is at centre. At left and right are 'bottle' designs, with fixed (left) and removable (right) elements. This illustration is from 'Physique Populaire' (Emile Desbeaux, 1891).
