Description
Death Valley, California, USA, satellite image. This is Death Valley National Park, consisting of desert valleys (pink) and salt pans (blue), surrounded by mountains topped by forests (green). Death Valley is one of the hottest, driest places on Earth. The bottom of the valleys are 86 metres below sea level, receive around 5 centimetres of rain a year, and temperatures often exceed 38 degrees Celsius. This image shows an area about 120 kilometres across. It combines data obtained by the Landsat 7 satellite's Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus sensor on 11 June and 20 July 2000.
