Carte de visite photograph of British naturalist Charles Darwin (1809-1882) with the illustration of a 'disappointed and sulky' chimpanzee that appeared in Darwin's work 'The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals' (1872). Darwin was greatly moved by what he saw as the near-human emotions of the great apes.
