Artist's Description

D-Day landings. Aerial view of Juno Beach at Courseulles-sur-Mer on the Normandy coast of France during the D-Day landings. The D-Day landings of 6 June 1944 were the largest seaborne invasion in history. Over 5000 vessels transported an Allied force of some 156,000 troops across the English Channel. Beachheads were established following fierce fighting that left more than 4000 dead. This was followed by the landing of large numbers of soldiers and equipment. By the end of August, more than three million Allied troops were in France. This photo was taken from a US Army Air Force Lockheed F-5 Lightning reconnaissance plane.
