Cytoskeleton. Computer artwork of a section through a cell showing its cytoskeleton. The cytoskeleton is made up of three types of proteins: actin filaments (blue), intermediate filaments and microtubules (orange). The cytoskeleton is responsible for intracellular transport, structure and motility of the cell, as well as segregating the chromosomes during nuclear division. Also seen are mitochondria (green), which produce the cell's energy and rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER, blue). RER is a membrane bound organelle that is covered in ribosomes (blue spheres). It is the site of lipid synthesis and the production of membrane bound proteins.
